Leaving Certificate Curriculum

Leaving Certificate Curriculum

Students usually begin a two years of study for the Leaving Certificate examination upon completion of Transition Year.

All students take the core subjects:

English, French, Gaeilge, Mathematics, Physical Education, Religious Education, RSE and Career Guidance.

Students may choose four subjects from the following list of eight subjects:

Art, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Geography, History, Music and Physics.

Students are given a free choice each year and choose their subjects in order of priority. The subjects are grouped so that as many students as possible may study the subjects of their choice.

Option groups are formed according to demand and with the aim of allowing the maximum number of students to study their preferred combination of subjects.

Currently the Leaving Certificate examination is the gateway to third level education and students are advised to take their studies seriously.

At least 3 hours study five nights a week is recommended.
